Project Mgmt / Ops BoF - Denver Drupalcon (Part 1)

First of all I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to come out to the BoF. In case you missed it, we had a fabulous turn out of almost 40 people! Below is part one of our discussion because so much information was collected, we need two posts to capture it all.

But first, a quick, shameless, plug of my previous blog post... I’m looking for YOUR help to get more PM content at Drupalcon.

An Invocation for Beginnings

Wow, pretty powerful stuff, Ze. Thanks for that.

One that hit me:
"Let me not be so vain to think that I'm a sole author of my victories and a victim of my defeats."

And:
"God let me enjoy this. Life isn't just a sequence of waiting for things to be done."

Did something he said hit home? Why?

Bluespark and Istos Partnership

Recently, there has been a fair amount of moving and shaking going on with respect to Drupal development companies, both real and imagined (link below). In the real—and incredibly awesome—category, Bluespark is happy to announce that Drupal development and semantic web consultancy Istos.com is becoming Bluespark's exclusive contractor and partner in southern Europe, and that the founder of the company, Dr. Ronald Ashri, is joining the Bluespark team as our Technical Director.

Ask: What can you remove?

How often do you get stuck on a design problem? For me, it usually happens when we go from the concept of a thing to the first version of the wireframes. Yes, it made some sense to group these 10 things together, but from a design standpoint, we find that the page layout doesn’t work. Maybe there are too many things on the page. Or maybe there are too many DIFFERENT things on the page. Or, maybe, through the process of design, we realize that those things shouldn’t have been grouped together in the first place.

Bluespark's User Experience Design Principles

The success of a project — any project — begins with the right mindset. Without the right understanding of the world around us, we are limited in what we can accomplish. But with the right mindset, we can accomplish great things. The key to Bluespark's success on project after project starts with the right mindset as embodied by a core set of design principles: a core set of values that we use to approach every project.

Designing at 9,600 ft Above Sea Level

While I admit that this June's Reasons to be Creative Conference, conveniently located 10 minutes away from me in NYC, is more up my alley, I'm glad that I made the trip to Denver earlier this month for DrupalCon 2012. Even though, as a designer and creative director, I didn't find some of the DrupalCon sessions to be that relevant to my work, I did enjoy the sessions I attended and had a great time in Denver.

Do you want a PM day at Drupalcon?

Having been to several Drupal events, I've noticed they all have a few things in common:
The content is usually excellent and educational.
The largest group there is typically developers, and they influence the content.
Because of the first 2 points, there is typically little to no project management (PM) discussion, this last con in Denver having only 1 session for instance.
